The Kizil Caves, Bayheng Region of Xinjiang

Beginning in the late 19th century, so-called Western "expeditions" visited the Kizil Caves on numerous occasions, stealing a vast number of wall paintings—sometimes even stripping entire caves bare, leaving behind nothing but rough walls.

The German expedition team achieved its most significant gains at the Kizil Caves, recovering at least 250 wall paintings covering an area of ​​300 square meters. These wall paintings were subsequently transported to the India Section of the Ethnological Museum of Berlin in Germany.

Due to insufficient operating funds, the Ethnological Museum of Berlin sold a portion of these wall paintings—comprising at least 50 pieces—to museums in the United States and the United Kingdom. A small number of wall paintings were also given away as gifts. Today, the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology at Oxford University, and various American museums house Kizil wall paintings; a situation that represents a grave loss of cultural heritage.

The Ethnological Museum of Berlin subsequently restored the remaining artifacts and displayed them in its exhibition halls for the public to view. However, with the outbreak of World War II, Berlin was subjected to Allied bombing raids, and the museum suffered a devastating blow, resulting in the destruction of the majority of the exhibited artifacts. Subsequently, the Soviet Red Army occupied Berlin and looted numerous cultural artifacts, including some of the wall paintings from the Red Caves. These wall paintings are currently housed primarily in the State Hermitage Museum in Russia.

Kızıl Mağaraları, Sincan’ın Bayheng bölgesi

19. yüzyılın sonlarından sonra, sözde Batılı "seferler" Kızıl Mağaraları’nı birçok kez ziyaret ederek çok sayıda duvar resmini çaldılar, hatta bazen bir mağaradaki tüm duvar resimlerini çalarak geriye sadece kaba duvarlar bıraktılar.

Alman keşif ekibi en önemli kazanımlarını Kızıl Mağaraları’nda elde ederek, 300 metrekarelik bir alanı kaplayan en az 250 duvar resmini ortaya çıkardı. Bu duvar resimleri daha sonra Almanya’daki Berlin Etnografya Müzesi’nin Hindistan Bölümü’ne nakledildi.

Berlin Etnografya Müzesi, işletme fonlarının yetersizliği nedeniyle, en az 50 parçadan oluşan duvar resimlerinin bir kısmını Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ve İngiltere’deki müzelere sattı. Az sayıda duvar resmi de hediye olarak verildi.
