Do you know this man?

He’s Justin McCarthy, an American historian and professor at the University of Louisville.

He’s not an enemy of Türkiye.

He has no vested interest, no nationality in this cause.

And he uses this expression: "What happened to the Turks in the Balkans is one of the worst things that has ever happened to mankind."

For a full one hundred and one years, from 1821 to 1922, five and a half million Ottoman Muslims were expelled from Europe.

More than five million were either killed or died of starvation and disease while fleeing.

More than ten million people were systematically expelled, and the world doesn’t know this.

It’s not in textbooks.

There are no commemorations.

There are no museums.

Because the victims of this story were Muslim and Turkish.

No one wrote about their suffering in the 19th century.

The Balkans were not a colony for the Ottomans.

The Balkans were the heart of the Ottoman Empire.

Before Istanbul came Edirne.

Before Bursa came Skopje.

But with the end of the 19th century, this region witnessed one of the most systematic purges history has ever seen.

Many Balkan cities that we know today as modern cities were actually Turkish metropolises.

Turkish was spoken in the streets of Thessaloniki, Bitola, and Sofia.

Then came 1821.

The Tripoli massacre.

Three days.

The commander of the Greek forces, Kolokotronis, himself said: "My horse’s hooves barely touched the ground because of the corpses on the ground."

More than thirty-five thousand Turks died in this massacre alone.

In three days, in one city.

One of McCarthy’s most shocking observations is this: the Greek uprising set a model for later uprisings in the Balkans.

This wasn’t random violence.

It was a method.

Conscious, planned, repeated.

Kill the Turks, burn their houses, prevent them from returning, keep the region Christian.

Then came the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878.

Russia declared war on the Ottoman Empire and invaded Bulgaria.

More than six hundred thousand people were massacred in Bulgaria.

Twenty- seven percent of the Ottoman Muslims.

They burned the houses of the Turks who were forced to migrate so they couldn’t return.

These weren’t war casualties.

It was ethnic cleansing.

And in Bulgaria alone, half of the Muslim population, yes, half, lost their lives.

In 1821, Turks living in villages and towns in Western Thrace were taken outside their settlements and massacred.

More than twenty-five thousand Western Thracian Turks were killed.

Twenty- five thousand.

In just one region, in just one period.

The last European territories of the Ottoman Empire were slipping away.

But this was not just a loss of land.

Until then, Muslims were the largest religious community in the Balkans.

They were the majority, and after the war, they became a minority.

Through massacres, exiles, and starvation.

There is no publication in Western countries regarding the history of the massacres suffered by Muslims in the Balkans, the Caucasus, and Anatolia.

The losses are not included in textbooks or history books.

The Western world coded the suffering of Muslims as statistics, and the suffering of Christians as tragedy.

There are no commemoration days for them.

Yet the truth was this: the demographic structure of the Balkans was changed by genocide.

Five and a half million people were exiled, five million were martyred.

It is our duty to honor the memory of those nameless heroes, those nameless refugees, whose names are not found in history books, and to proclaim the truth.

Because the Balkans are not a geography, they are a wound.

Selanik’in, Manastır’ın, Sofya’nın sokaklarında Türkçe konuşulurdu.
